I miss being a grown up.

Yes, I said it… and I meant it.

It’s tough being a non-traditional student. Returning to school after living in the “real world”, growing and changing along the way, can be extremely frustrating at times. It is easy to write off some of the classes as a waste of time because what is being taught is generically inherent at this stage of the game. Given my experience in teaching everyone from itty bitty toddlers to Fortune 500 CEOs does not help matters. Sure, I have a lot to add during class discussions, but am I truly learning anything new?

I miss being a grown up. I miss living in my own place. I miss my dinners of snack wraps, cookies, and Diet Coke. I miss downing mass quantities of said beverage without hearing endless diatribes about how bad it is for me. I miss earning a real and steady paycheck and not having to scrutinize every little purchase. I miss being able to travel at the drop of a hat. I miss being a grown up.

I miss the city. I miss the subway. Yes, I actually just wrote that. I miss keeping nothing but beverages and condiments in my fridge. I miss walking down to the Bodega on the corner for a Haagen Dazs chocolate ice cream bar. I miss Broadway ticket raffles resulting in cheap front row or box seats. I miss being able to play Guitar Hero in my underwear, not caring whether my neighbors thought I was a crazy wackjob rocking out on a plastic Fisher Price-looking instrument. I miss my job. I miss my friends.

  1. It would be very difficult for me to give up the “grown up” lifestyle. It is amazing how quickly we become accustomed to our ways and how difficult it can be to change up our ways. The good news is you are not without friends.. you have the late night seesmic crew haha :)

Good luck and here’s to getting back to being a grown up sooner than later.

  2. you crack me up! soon, soon. grownupness will come back very soon.

seriously, though, school does suck. most real learning is done on the job and in life… classes are just kind of a formality you have to go through to get the piece of paper that says that you know something. ugh.
